AGARTALA: Huge amounts of drugs, freebies and cash were recovered in the state of Tripura ahead of the elections in the state. Multiple events of poll-related violence were also reported in the state as the campaigning for the upcoming polls came to an end on Monday.
The Chief Electoral Official for the state of Tripura, Gitte Kirankumar Dinkarrao mentioned on Monday that large quantities of contraband had been confiscated by the authorities ahead of the assembly polls in the state. The total worth of the captured items is mentioned as Rs 44 Crs while adding the security measures taken in the state to prevent any untoward incident.
"More than 250 nakas have been set up across the state. From today we've sealed the borders with Assam and Mizoram. So far we have made seizures worth over Rs 44 crore. This includes cash, drugs, gold freebies," mentioned Gitte Kirankumar Dinkarro.
Notably, more than 400 companies of security personnel which accounts to more than 43000 members of different agencies have been deployed across the state to ensure free and fair elections. Several high-profile politicians including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Bharatiya Janata Party president Jagat Prakash Nadda campaigned for their candidates in the state.
While the leaders of the participating political parties were seen attacking each other with words from the stages of the political rallies, it was way more physical at the ground level. Multiple election-related fights broke out at different places in the state over the last few days. Supporters of the Communist Party, the Indian National Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party were reported to be involved in these actions.
The state election which is scheduled to take place on Thursday is expected to see a triangular contest between the Bharatiya Janata Party, the newly formed TIPRA Motha and the coalition between Communist Party-led Left parties and Congress.
